BLOOMINGTON-NORMAL COMMUNITY COOPERATIVE

ABOUT

We are a handful of homeschooling families who have been meeting together weekly for more than a year, and are creating a place for our children to have a more classroom-like environment.  Along with offering our kids new experiences, we want to utilize the wide range of skills among the home educators in our group - especially in subject matter that is cumbersome to complete with just a couple of kids or that is outside of our comfort zones.

As we have been meeting together consistently, with transparency and a commitment to building community, we have found a way to better navigate some of the challenges and isolation that can come with homeschooling.  While we are all Christian, we come from a variety of backgrounds and aim to promote unity and ecumenism within our group. We have chosen to focus on that which draws us together and builds one another up, while making space for differing opinions in individual doctrines and interpretations.

We will be getting together at parks throughout the summer, please check our Facebook Page or email us for details! We would love to get to know you!!

CLASSES

Science and music classes for grades preK - 5 will be offered. The classes will meet weekly on Monday mornings from 9:30 - 11:00. The students will be divided into two age groups. This allows both age groups 40 minutes of science and music each.

MUSIC CLASS

The Music courses will be taught by Heidi Brooks. Both age groups will be Bell and Chime choirs (instruments provided) with music appreciation built in! Bell choirs date back to the 17th century and serve as an easy and beautiful way to enjoy playing music in a group setting. Students will also gain an age appropriate ability to read music. We will learn easy classical and sacred tunes, basic music notation and become familiar with the sounds of Bach, Beethoven and Mozart.

SCIENCE CLASSES

The Science classes will be taught by Amy Hertel. We will be following Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding and Elementary Science Education, both by Bernard J. Nebel. Students will get to take part in a variety of experiments as they explore many disciplines of science including introductions to physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science.
